In a recent statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared that the concept of North Korea’s denuclearization is a closed issue, drawing criticism from the South Korean Foreign Ministry. Lavrov also expressed opposition to Western sanctions against North Korea and rejected IAEA resolutions on the North Korean nuclear issue.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry responded by emphasizing the importance of strict compliance with UN Security Council resolutions and international law regarding North Korea’s complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization. They called on Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council and a leader in nuclear non-proliferation efforts, to act responsibly and take appropriate measures to address threats to international security.
The diplomatic exchange underscores the ongoing challenges in managing North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and the need for continued international cooperation to address this critical issue.
