France’s far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party, led by Marine Le Pen, faces a trial for alleged fictitious hiring of MEP assistants. The case, involving a loss of €7 million from the EU, is set to take place from September 30 to November 27 in Paris.
An investigation began in 2014, revealing fraudulent practices by FN members, including Marine Le Pen. The trial involves 27 defendants, with Le Pen risking up to 10 years in prison and €1 million in fines. The outcome could hinder her chances for the 2027 presidential election.
In a similar case, MoDem party leader François Bayrou was acquitted, offering Le Pen’s team hope for a favorable verdict. RN President Jordan Bardella is also embroiled in the affair for his alleged involvement in document forgery.
Despite the accusations, Le Pen maintains her innocence, denouncing the proceedings as unfair. The trial outcome will have significant implications on the future of RN and its members.
