Search Continues for Migrants from Overturned Boat in the Canary Islands
Rescuers are working tirelessly to locate 48 migrants from a capsized boat near the Spanish Canary Islands. Unfortunately, hopes of finding survivors are diminishing as time passes.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday, with 84 people on board the vessel. Eight adults and one child lost their lives, while 27 were rescued. The migrants, hailing from Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal, had been at sea for two days without food or water before alerting authorities.
Regional president Fernando Clavijo fears that more bodies will surface in the coming days. Despite ongoing search efforts, no further survivors have been found. The boat, which may have originally carried 90 passengers, originated from Nouadhibou in Mauritania.
The incident highlights the growing migration crisis in the region, with a 154% increase in crossings from West Africa to the Canary Islands in recent months. As rescue operations continue, the international community must address this humanitarian challenge to prevent further tragedies at sea.
