The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 35-day ultimatum to address the crises in the public university system. The ultimatum was extended from the initial 21 days due to the government’s lack of response, starting on September 23, 2024.
Stanley Ogoun, Zonal Coordinator of the Port Harcourt Zone, condemned the government’s inaction and highlighted the neglect faced by public universities. The union demanded the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, funding for university revitalization, and reform in the NUC Act to curb university proliferation.
Ogoun criticized the government’s extravagant spending on personal benefits while claiming fund unavailability. ASUU also seeks the release of unpaid salaries, payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and the implementation of visitation panels’ reports.
The union urged Nigerians to visit their website to compare policies and hold the government accountable for any disruptions in the public university system. Ogoun emphasized the need for economic fairness and urged citizens to protect Nigeria’s public space with integrity.
