A British government-chartered flight is scheduled to depart from Beirut to evacuate UK nationals from Lebanon on Wednesday. This comes in response to the escalating tensions in the region.
The evacuation is open to UK nationals, their spouses or partners, and children under 18, with priority given to those most vulnerable. Previously, Britons were advised to leave Lebanon using commercial flights.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the volatile situation in Lebanon, prompting the deployment of 700 troops to Cyprus for potential evacuations. Cyprus, known for hosting evacuated nationals temporarily, will accommodate the evacuees under the “Estia” plan before they return to their home countries.
This evacuation echoes similar efforts in the past, such as in 2006 during the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. Cyprus continues to play a crucial role in facilitating safe returns for evacuated individuals.
