The EFF has heavily criticized agriculture minister John Steenhuisen’s first 100 days in office, accusing the department of being “flagrantly incompetent and corrupt”. EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys called out Steenhuisen for prioritizing “cadre deployment” over merit-based appointments.
Mathys highlighted Steenhuisen’s controversial nominations of unqualified individuals for key positions in the department, including podcaster Roman Cabanac, whose racist background sparked outrage. Despite calls for resignation, Cabanac remains in his position, with Steenhuisen being blamed for fostering white supremacists in government.
The EFF attributed delays in appointments, salaries, and departmental progress to Steenhuisen’s alleged cadre deployment practices, accusing him of holding the country hostage for his political gain. The EFF demanded accountability for Steenhuisen’s incompetence and racist appointments.
