Indian doctors in Kolkata have resumed their strike in protest of the brutal rape and murder of a colleague, citing the lack of improvements in hospital safety measures. The 31-year-old doctor’s body was found at a state-run hospital in August, sparking nationwide outrage over violence against women. Despite briefly returning to work last month, doctors have decided to cease work again until their demands are met.
The West Bengal state government failed to fulfill promises to enhance lighting, install CCTV cameras, and improve overall security in hospitals, according to union spokesman Aniket Mahato. The doctors plan to take to the streets to ensure the government addresses their concerns and seeks justice for their colleague.
Following the incident, tens of thousands of Indians joined protests, highlighting the need for better safety measures for female healthcare workers. The Supreme Court has ordered a national task force to review security for healthcare professionals, emphasizing the nation’s shock over the heinous crime.
