Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is on a diplomatic mission in Nairobi, meeting with President William Ruto to discuss the future of Somalia’s security as the mandate for the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (Atmis) comes to an end in December. The talks also revolve around the transition to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (Aussom) starting in January 2025.
President Mohamud’s visit aims to secure compensation for troops exiting Somalia and garner support for Aussom. The trip also addresses trade discussions between Somalia and Kenya. However, tensions with Ethiopia, a key contributor to Atmis, remain unresolved over a naval base agreement with Somaliland.
Highlighted during the trip were strengthened cooperation on security, trade, and development with Djibouti, Uganda, and Burundi. The focus is on charting a stable future for Somalia and securing funding for the new mission. Discussions with troop-contributing countries emphasize the importance of predictable funding for success in Aussom.
