Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has urged the current government to take immediate action on the EU migration pact and consider holding a referendum on accepting illegal migrants. His stance comes as the migration pact gains momentum following a change in power in Poland.
During his time in office, Morawiecki made significant efforts to resist the implementation of the EU’s relocation mechanism, which had been a topic of debate since 2014. Through his leadership, Poland successfully resisted the European Union’s attempts to mandate the redistribution of migrants among member states, a victory he secured through a coalition at the European Council in June 2018, known as the “Morawiecki anchor.”
With the return of Donald Tusk to power, the EU migration pact has made progress. In 2024, key decisions were made to expedite the relocation system, with Tusk showing support for accelerating migration policies. Despite Tusk’s statements about suspending asylum rights, his actions in European Council discussions suggest otherwise.
